Leaving to start living 5253 km in photos across Canada

The good luck china tea cup.

The good luck china tea cup.

Almost a year ago, I was just about to start my life over. After a big break up and a whole lot of thinking, I decided it was best for me at the time to take this life moment to run away for an undeterminated period of time and at the same time be reunited with my family and friends I grew up with.  I had no idea what was waiting for me nor did I know that this was going to be a life changing experience. One I force myself into, only because the voice inside of me was telling me to do so. So it had to be.

I freed myself from all I could not pack in my car, finished up my photography contracts, said my goodbye to all my friends and did my last wedding on the Island as a second shooter for the amazing Nina Lilly-Ann Sinclair. This wedding was just the day before the big adventure begins. A lot of emotions and mixed feelings were going through me as we were shooting this mid-Islands beautiful misty and rainy wedding surrounded by foggy mountains and magical lakes in Strathcona Provincial Park. I remember later that night picking up a cup for coffee at the wedding reception, one among about 50 other ones that were placed up side down on a small table. It’s was at that very moment that I knew I was making the right choice. I had picked the good luck ceramic vintage china tea cup. The only one in the lot.

The wedding was over.  I was about to leave behind me the last 15 years of my life and experiences, past love, friends and people I had met along the way. I had to fit all the road trip essentiels and other more or less important things I had accumulated over all these years in my medium size vehicle and drive across the immensity of our Canadian country, all the way back to my roots.

My good friend from Quebec who also happens to be a photographer had taken this opportunity to enriched her portfolio and pursue her photography project “People in my lens”, which she had recently started, and most importantly to be my moral support during this hard time and drive with me 5253 km of tears, anger, joy, serenity and laughter, all the way to Quebec.

I greeted her downtown Victoria the day before we left. In a few hours I showed her around this place I was going to miss with all my heart and soul as well as my favourite beach: French Beach. We had a not so good night of sleep followed by a hectic morning trying to cramp everything  further down the bottom of my car to make room for a couple extra nit and gnats in this already more that loaded vehicle. We finally managed after a few trials and errors and after leaving a couple of extra things behind such as my printer and winter jackets. Not too mention that I had previously thought of taking my cat with me in the car.  Call me crazy cat lady if you want! This idea rapidly went down the drain.

Departure day was rainy and sad. But I had my supportive and amazing friend Maryse, a new and exiting entire life in front of me, if I gave it some time, and an amazing project to look forward to. Things were going to be ok. Whoever knows me also knows that I like projects and to challenge myself. And what a better time to start a project than at the start of a new journey. I have been vegetarian/vegan for almost 15 years now and although I don’t express myself too much with this matter, maybe by the fear of being judge, I had the strong desire of sharing my believes and achieve a personal project that little did I know was going to be published in Versus Magazine. This project was about doing a “vegan" road trip across the country, first to sensibilise myself to the world that surrounds us and that we live in day to day and also to inspire others to maybe do the same. Nature, environnement, animals and the way human is destroying the planet and its living creatures really touches me and I can never really get to fully express myself in this debate. This challenge was allowing me through my passion and creativity to show the world to people as I see it and as I think it really is  but also to realize that it’s possible to make this world a better place in almost any conditions, that we Canadian are free as human and it’s up to us to decide of the values that we believe will better this place for us and the next generations to come. And how to put our egos aside, respect and live in harmony with all the beautiful living things that surround us. Pause a moment and stop thinking of what we need but rather look around us and come to the realization of what our planet needs instead.

While in the prairies we visited this colony that I kept anonymous in respect for its people. In this day and age it's very mesmerizing and at the same time difficult to understand the way these people live. In a way they are ahead of our individualist society by the fact that they share everything and help each other to assure that everyone always have their basic needs filled. On the other hand they do not really know anything outside of their colony and the idea of two girls crossing the country by themselves is just way out of their world, even absurd to them. We ask one of the young lady if she had ever dreamed or wished to go on a trip somewhere and her answer was to maybe go to another colony and maybe meet a husband there. When we brought up Mexico she knew about it but would have never thought of travelling there as it's just not something they do. Seeing how this colony lives made me come to the sudden realization of how lucky I was to be born in a society where we can be so free. How it's easy to take our freedom for granted and how it can have very negative repercussions on so many different aspects of or lives, our society, our planet. We can make our own choices and are very free to do so, so why not think our every day decisions through and make smarter choices, since we can.

Sooke Harbour House Wedding by Veronique Gagnon Photography

West Coast Ocean Side Styled Wedding at the Sooke Harbour House

Bride and bridesmaids in all in cream with pastel accents

It's always such great feeling do be doing style shoots. It's the freedom of being as creative as you wish to be, working along some other amazing people who you share your vision with and models who are just so sweet and easy going. In this epic wedding style shoot, we wanted to feature some of the best ocean front wedding venue as well as some beautiful feminine bridal styles and create different looks by changing the accessories, hair styles and makeup. Our goal was to create something very feminine and beautiful to inspired the lovely Vancouver Island future brides and give them some fresh yet natural ideas and make them discover stunning ocean side hotels and resorts. We spent an entire day shooting in 3 different location (Delta Victoria Ocean Pointe Resort and Spa, Oak Bay Beach Hotel, and Sooke harbour house) and getting the models hair and makeup and style ready. I could not have done this without the amazing team we had!

This part 1 of 3 blog was shot at the Sooke Harbour House.

THE VENUE

This 28 rooms boutique Hotel was recently awarded by WeddingBells for being on the top 30 of the loveliest wedding venues in Canada. Less than an hour away from Victoria, located in the town of Sooke (where I lived for more than 6 years - such a beautiful part of the Island and a fun town with so much wildlife and nature things to do near by), the upscale harbourside inn is facing Sooke Basin, overlooking Whiffin Spit peninsula and the Olympic mountains. This beautiful little piece of paradise is just the perfect venue for a wedding! They have been hosting weddings for over 33 years they make it their goal to help you create a peaceful, unique and relaxing wedding, a magical occasion in which every detail is perfect. They help make the challenging process of planning a wedding effortless with the help of the sweet and lovely Gemma who is their wedding coordinator. Just to have her help you plan your wedding is a good enough reason to book your wedding at the Sooke House, she is so great and easy to work with!

 THE STYLE

Romantic, vintage, dreamy and magical,  this inspiration features a pastel palette, loose hair styles, roses, subtle gold, laces, water colours and gardens. It's a Champetre wedding the way you have always dreamed of it.

We decided to go with the bridal party only, all ladies for the models to create a more feminine and fun vibe as well as something different to inspire bride and bridesmaids. For the entire shoot (in the 3 different hotels-to come in other blog soon) we only used one dress for each models but turned them into different styles with different hairstyles and accessories to showcase the different styles that can be done with one dress. Bride and bridesmaids where dressed and accessorized all from  stores in Victoria to keep it all local: (Blush Bridal Boutique and Violette ) Even our engagement rings were provided by a local artist that specializes in wedding and engagement rings made from recycled materiel (Emma Glover Design). Hair and makeup where done by two talented Victoria hair stylist an makeup artist that specialize in wedding (Conscious Hair and Alexandra Foreman Artistry who always knows how to make a woman look her best!). Elena from Conscious Hair always does such beautiful and natural looking hair style. One thing that I love about her business is that she always keeps the environment in mind and uses natural and eco-friendly hair product like John Masters Organics. I am so sensitive to environnemental issues and I believe that any little thing we can do to help keep our planet alive is a small step toward a big achievement. So why not do it too on your wedding day? A green wedding anyone?

Award-winning designer Karen Stone, owner of Sea of Bloom floral boutique located right in Sooke made beautiful bouquet and flower arrangements for for the ladies. Pastel and roses to stay with the our vintage romantic theme.

THE DECOR

With over 10 year of experience, Tricia Hartig owner of En Vied Events created our beautiful intimate wedding table inside the Sooke Harbour House restaurant with the help of Karen from A Sea of Bloom who supplied the floral arrangements. Although the Harbour house can accommodated very private weddings, they also have a tent outside and an indoor area a well were they can accommodate bigger wedding. The beautiful menues and other stationary were made by talented also award-winning Laura Prpich from Tuktu Paper Co. Laura is just an amazing illustrator and is certainly one of my favourite wedding paper good designer on the Island!

Heading for the ceremony site at the Japanese gardens of Esquimalt Gorge Park

Heading for the ceremony site at the Japanese gardens of Esquimalt Gorge Park

I had never been to the Japanese gardens at the Esquimalt Gorge Park prior to the wedding.  It's a beautiful park with a array of flower, trees, fountains, small waterfalls and wooden bridges. I even got the story on it as it's pretty interesting!

In 1904, the British Columbia Electric Railway Company purchased twenty acres on the Gorge Waterway from the Hudson’s Bay Company. The following year, Tramway Gorge Park opened with walkways, bridges, picnic tables, and most importantly, electric lights. And The BC Electric Railway Company had their railcar travel up through there. Tramway Gorge Park became a popular day-trip for the citizens of Victoria. There was a lot of things for people to do there. There was swimming, amusement, games…that sort of thing. Two years later, in 1906, two prominent members of Victoria’s Japanese Canadian community, Hayato “Harry” Takata and Yoshitaro “Joe” Kishida, raised five thousand dollars to open a Japanese Tea Garden in the park. One of the men, explains Fehr “convinced his father, Isaburo Kishida, who was a professional gardener in Japan, to come to Victoria to work on the garden…to design the grounds and the teahouse that was going to be there. For the next three decades, Tramway Gorge Park, and the Japanese Garden flourished. But then came the 1930’s, the Depression, and a declining interest in visits to the park. The scenic railway closed, some of the buildings and attractions burned down in a fire, the waterslide closed, and the bathhouse was removed. By the late 1930’s as global forces moved the world to war, the park was neglected and forgotten. And in 1939 the imposition of the war measures act led to all sorts of subsequent laws and acts that started to restrict the movements andactivities of the Japanese Canadian people specifically on the coast. Then on December 7, 1941, the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbour and so all people of Japanese descent were removed from the coast. They lost their property in terms of houses and businesses, and they were interned in the Interior. At that point the garden obviously wasn’t operating. It got vandalized, things were sold off, eventually the government itself sold it off…ironically enough to help pay for the cost of internment.

Dave+Alex Beautiful Fall Wedding in Osoyoos/Victoria BC Photographer

Dave + Alex, what a beautiful and fun couple. They had an amazing fall wedding in Osoyoos and it was so hot it felt like it was the middle of the summer. They met in a restaurant they worked at together, fell in love and did not leave each other out of sight since then. Their wedding was held at the

Watermark Beach Resort

and they wanted something romantic and unique for their portraits so we went to the heritage barn near by. Alicia at Paraiso Events did the planning and

Katy Luxe

did a stunning job with Alex's hair and makeup! Here are some of my favourite moments.
